Fees for cremation

Fees include the charges made by the crematorium, the fees for the doctor’s certificates and usually a standard fee for the minister who takes the service. An organist also needs to be paid in addition to other costs. The funeral director will usually pay all fees and charge accordingly. Crematorium fees on average are from £600 with extra fees for those who did not reside in the district of cremation. Doctors who prepare initial forms will usually charge a minimum fee which rises each year.

On occasions, when death has occurred in a hospital, the hospital will wish to carry out a post- mortem to improve their knowledge of the patient’s condition. The consent of relatives must be given and if so, form C will not be required-providing the post-mortem was carried out by a pathologist of not less than five years standing and the result known by the doctor who completed form B. Only one fee will be charged, unless the pathologist was less than five years standing, in which case another doctor must complete form C and the full fee will be charged. Most crematoria charge reduced fees for children up to school leaving age. You should check the above fees as they change subject to notice.

Most crematoria are run by local authorities, although private crematoria do exist. Each has its scale of fees and offers a brochure of services and fees, usually having an open day for the public, usually Sunday, as crematoria are open only from Monday to Friday, with occasional Saturdays.
